Pizza Nerds, located at 1376 Cherry Bottom Rd in Gahanna, Ohio, is a pizzeria that brings a nostalgic '90s vibe to its patrons. Founded by former corporate nurses from western Pennsylvania, the establishment draws inspiration from their childhood memories of local pizza joints that were central to community gatherings and celebrations. Their journey began with "Farm Fired Pizzas," a mobile wood-fired pizza venture that served various communities in Central Ohio. After two years on the road, Pizza Nerds was established to offer their favorite style of pizza, crafted with hand-made and locally sourced ingredients. The venue also features freshly baked cookies from Cookie Nerds, enhancing its unique and inviting atmosphere.
Drew Ponton and our team recently assisted Pizza Nerds in landing their new Gahanna location. Drew recently spoke with owner Brent Gargasz about the business and the real estate process:
Tell us about yourself, your business, and how you got started. How did you get into the pizza business?
Honesty, it was supposed to be a hobby food truck back in 2019. Some things changed with my nursing job and I figured I’d try it full time and see what happens. I fell in love with the science of dough making and trying to create a really good pizza. It just kept snowballing.
Did anything unexpected happen in the process that you’ll plan for next time?
Opening a pizzeria is a wild thing. Folks get really excited about something new and you get hit with a rush that’s hard to plan for. I’d probably try to open slower if I opened another one. Just to prevent the mass flow of orders on day 1-7.
What was the real estate part of the process like? How did Colliers/our team help facilitate your needs and success?
Drew saved our business. When we got put into a position requiring relocation, he worked so hard for us. I can’t imagine finding this location without him. I’m forever grateful for Drew and Colliers.
What has the reception of Pizza Nerds been like in the community?
It’s been unbelievable. The community has welcomed us in with open arms. I was nervous to move the shop, but we knew a lot of our customers were out this way, but all the new faces have really blown us away.
What do you hope for the future of Pizza Nerds? How do you want to grow your brand in Columbus?
I’d love to grow the brand in an intelligent way. Keeping quality high is my priority. For now I’m focusing on growing this shop and helping my staff reach their potential. We’ve got a talented crew and they can do a lot of good. I’m very lucky to have them.
Lastly... What should first-time customers order from the menu?
Honestly, you’ve got to stick with what you personally enjoy. If you’re adventurous, try our smash burger pizza or our chicken bacon ranch. Both can’t miss and we do it all from scratch in house.
